MY METHOD: Solution Focused Brief Therapy in the contexts of MARRIAge and Family therapy and SEX THERAPy
My work is all about you reaching your goals, replacing your problems with your best hopes using the modality of Solution Focused Brief Therapy, (SFBT) a practice that is characterized by respect, curiosity, and hard work done in the form of conversations. SFBT has been shown to be as effective as other therapies, but in less time.
Our conversations will get you seeing clearly what your preferred outcome from therapy is. You will come up with details to help you recognize exactly what you want to have happening in your life, what it will mean for you to have it and the strengths, talents and resources that will use to help you get it, in a way that's right for you.
Each session should be complete in and of itself, and you should leave each session feeling that your time was well spent. The process takes only as many sessions as are useful to you, no more. If you feel we have worked well together, you are welcome to schedule any available appointment whenever you see fit.
What's different about MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPists?
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, (LMFT ) I am specifically trained to work with couples, families and groups, as well as individuals. LMFTs are the only group of mental health practitioners whose license specifically requires them to be thoroughly trained, (including extensive clinical supervision and mentoring), to work with more than one person in the room, to think systemically, and to help you achieve your goals using brief, effective, evidence based short-term therapy.
what is sex therapy and how is it different from other types of PSYCHOtherapy?
Sex therapy is a short-term form of talk therapy with someone who has undertaken a significant amount of additional training and and earned a credential in addition to their license to practice psychotherapy. The Certified Sex Therapist credential means a psychotherapist is qualified to help people with the emotional, cognitive and behavioral aspects of sexual problems. Sex Therapy feels like regular talk therapy, but often has an educational component to it, as most people, sadly, are not brought up to understand how their sexuality works, and most therapists (as well as many MDs) receive little to no training in human sexuality!
There are not that many of us: last time I checked, there were only roughly 1,000 certified sex therapists in the entire United States, where there are roughly 500,000–600,000 people practicing psychotherapy.
If you do sex therapy with me, you can (and should) talk about other aspects of your life, which are of course interrelated. I became a sex therapist because of the number of clients who told me that when they tried to talk to another therapist about sex, that person became uncomfortable and/or judgemental. If you already know a lot about your own sexuality and want to discuss specific sexual issues or practices with me, you won’t have to educate me about what they are: most likely I will already know. If you need information about how to have a better sex life, I can provide it.
You can get more information about sex therapy on this page of my website and from ASSECT, the organization that certified me and other sexuality professionals in the United States.
